Over the summer, I wanted to try a different type of book than I normally read so I tried A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park. It's a pretty short book so I decided it would be a good book to try something new on. It's about a boy leave his town and family because a war is going on. He makes a trip across Africa in the desert to find a safe haven, food and water. In the future, a girl everyday two times a day has to fetch water for her family 8miles away. She can't do anything else during the day. As the books continues, Salva (the boy) and Nya (the girl)'s paths cross in an unexpected way.
This book was okay. I was really glad that I tried a new genre but didn't find myself getting lost in the book until the end. I prefer when you get sucked right in with books. I thought it was fun how the character roles alternated and felt sympathetic for Nya, who really wants to go to school but can't because her family needs the water.
I would recommend this book to people who enjoy books based on true stories. I don't think I would recommend this book to a younger child or teenager though because (sorry adults) it's a bit boring and sometimes as a younger person, you don't understand the struggle of surviving.
